Insulating paint additives are an easy and surprisingly effective way to improve the insulating efficiency of your home's interior and exterior walls. The basic principle at work is the same as a thermos bottle. In a thermos, a space is created between the interior and exterior surfaces and a vacuum is created in this space. The way that this principle translates to paint is by adding a powder to the paint that is composed of tiny ceramic microspheres. These microspheres have a vacuum inside that causes them to behave like little thermos bottles.

The paint finish created when these ceramic microspheres additives are embedded in the paint looks no different than an ordinary paint job. But, the resulting finish has a layer of these insulating spheres keeping heat from passing through the walls.
